Saturday (Nov 5th).
I think I am finally on Italian time. Weather in Catania continues to be rainy, and warm/humid. The hotel front desk indicated that today (Saturday) is a biger fish market in Catania -- every day there is a market, but Saturday's is bigger... and that it started very early. So up and out of the hotel before breakfast so that I can strive for that precious photo.
The expanded Fish market opened at 6am and is located on the other side of the Duomo relative to my hotel. All of the reviews made it sound like this was a sight not to be missed. It was very interesting, and only if people spoke Italian would Pike Street Market in Seattle be more interesting. The diversity of fish was interesting – cod, Anchovies, Octopus (called Polpo here -I dont mean Calamari .... but really Octopus with the suckers on their legs). Most of the people when I first got there were older people, and as the day progressed, the younger with children came out to buy. As you turned down alley after alley way, the market turned into other food, produce, cheese, meat, etc.
No purchases today... but it was time for breakfast.
They moved me to another room because of my complaint about the temperature. This one was not much cooler... Except, it had a balcony which meant leaving the doors open might cool the room down during the day. What I didn’t realize was the number of mosquitos in Catania....
Michelangelo (my italian cousin in Naples) was worried about my cell phone loss so he asked that I call him. Did some more walking around... But due to rain (not quite a downpour, but close to it). I cut day short. Had a nice dinner at a very nice restaurant on Crocifero. The owner had me pick out my seafood - a squid that they had bought that morning at the fish market. Nice dinner and a nice house wine.
Have a full day tour of Siracuse tomorrow my last day here.
